Meghalaya is often referred to as the "City of Pines", is not only known for its breathtaking landscapes and serene environment but also for its creative use of pinecones, but also for the creativeness in use of pinecones.

For generations, people of Meghalaya used pinecones for practical purposes like kindling for fires. However, in recent years, artisans and surrounding villages are creating decorative items such as wreaths, centerpieces, candle holders, wall hangings using pinecones, which are often woven together with bamboo and wood and other locally sourced material.

"As this craft grows, it reminds us of something important that needs to focus on sustainability and being eco-friendly," says June Dhar, a local artisan who even runs a retail store".

The entire year, the natural wonders change into home decoration pieces such as candle holders, wall hangings, and small planters. Expert artisans often combine pine cones with bamboo or cane and sell them in local markets as well as to the tourists visiting.

"Pinecones are not a waste. They are nature's artwork, and we are giving them a purpose in our homes." June added

Some retailers carry these unique crafts, which tend to attract tourists and locals. Pinecone Christmas ornaments and festival wreaths especially are in high demand for the holiday season. Another craft that often incorporates pinecones is in jewelry boxes or intricate models of traditional Khasi huts, blending tradition with artistry.
